Customs clearance & Brexit
Customer clearance is a required procedure for all importations into the UK.
Customer clearance procedure
Many of these procedures have now been simplified and will ultimately result in a paperless and relatively uninhibited passage for all cargos through Customs. However, a customs declaration will always be necessary prior to the goods being allowed to leave the port or point of clearance, and in many port’s this can only be transmitted to customs and excise electronically.
As a result, and in order to ensure the fastest and most efficient service to our customers we are computer linked to Customs and Excise via the MCP network at both Liverpool and Felixstowe.
This facility is an absolute requirement to ensure a fast, reliable and problem free passage for your goods through the port.
It is important that you not only employ a clearance agent who has such a facility but also ensure that they have the expertise and experience to guarantee that such customs declarations are transmitted correctly to avoid any future queries or possible penalties being incurred from Customs & Excise.
Such expertise will extend to the necessary documentation required and what customs codes and procedures will apply for goods originating in certain countries.
We also liaise with the numerous goverment departments / agencies / bodies that may want to inspect your cargo on arrival into the UK including Port Health, DEFRA (HMI, PHSI and Forestry Commission), Customs (X-Ray exams and full out turns), Trading Standards and the UK Border Force.
EXPORT CUSTOMS DECLARATIONS
There are of course customs formalities and declarations required for all export that leave the UK and we offer these facilities at all UK ports.
The importance of accurate and timely export entries cannot be underestimated. Failure to complete an export entry in time can result in cargo left on quay unshipped, which can in turn result in unnecessary storage charges and delays.
BREXIT STATUS & UPDATES
From 31st of January 2020 the UK left the EU. Brexit means a return to customs formalities and in reality most companies in the UK will be exposed to having to produce customs clearances for the first time for goods imported from Europe Less than half those traders are prepared.
HMRC have implemented the EORI/TPS system in order to facilitate a smoother and more sustainable transition after our departure which will be available for the first 12 months and maybe longer depending upon how negotiations fare. Therefore businesses who have not made appropriate contingency plans will be at huge risk of disrupting their daily operations for their cargo’s originating from Europe.
MACFARLANE HOLDINGS (UK) will be able to assist you with all of your UK Customs declaration from Europe. In addition if you have EORI/TSP status we can also help with your monthly declarations and payments of relevant duties/taxes as may be due for your period accounting. Simply contact our customs clearance team who will be pleased to advise you on all aspects and current changes as they occur on the above.
